THIS DAY LAST YEAR - Chapter 4

The Last Time I fed Mumma.

April 14th, 2021

We came back home from the hospital at 4 in the morning. Dad, Dickie Mama, Usha Atha, Esther Akka, and Raja Anna were with us. We made Mumma sleep in my room, and I served everyone water and something to eat. To everyone’s surprise, Mumma walked out of the room and sat with us all to talk. Dad said, “Annie go and sleep”, but she did not. She sat with us all and had a bread slice.

Dad was in a fix. He had a wedding to solemnize in another town and had his flight at 7 in the morning. He was stuck between mom and the ministry and was finding it hard to decide. Maa encouraged daddy to go and said that she would be fine. I was flabbergasted looking at my parents and thought Who are they? And How much do they trust the Lord?

They have been the perfect match for each other all their lives. They completed each other and were the definition of true love. The respect and love they had for each other were beyond words. The Lord was at the center of everything they did. They served the Lord with all they had. My parents had an amazing partnership and were the best example of teamwork as they were a team when it came to serving the Lord. My Mumma was Daddy’s best cheerleader, and Dad was Mumma’s support and strength. When I saw them choosing ministry over the struggle and pain they were going through, I praised the Lord with tears in my eyes.

Dad left for the airport, and I assured him that I would look after mom. I stayed awake all along and sat right beside Maa. She was very uneasy and was unable to sleep, so she sat up to pray and dozed off to sleep every now and then. I remember sitting right beside her all along to make sure she was doing good.

Mumma lost her appetite and was unable to eat anything. She was feeling uneasy, so I sat beside her and kept forcing her to eat something. Finally, she asked me to feed her and I did. It was her favourite dish, plain daal with rice and ghee. She had very little food and continued being on her knees. Now that I think of that moment, even though she had no strength, she still knelt down and prayed.

In the evening, I went to sleep, and Dickie mama came to keep a watch over Mumma. I woke up after some time and switched on the TV to keep Mumma occupied. After some time, Dad came back and met Mumma, she was fine for the next one hour, but then her oxygen levels started to droop down. We were advised to rush Maa to the hospital again.

We took her to the hospital, and they admitted her to the hospital. Maa was suffering from pneumonia, and the doctors said she’ll be fine. As long as the admission process was going on, we stood right beside Maa. They did a rapid test, and by God’s grace, Maa tested negative. After Seeing Mumma’s past medical history, they admitted her to the ICU, and none of us was allowed to stay with her at the hospital. We waved goodbye to Mumma and headed back home with a heavy heart.

Dear Reader,

We often complain and murmur about the little hurdles in our lives, but let me tell you, you are so much better than the ones who keep roaming around hospitals. Life comes to a full circle at hospitals, as people begin their life at a hospital as a baby and lose their lives there. You are so fortunate if you don’t need to visit the hospital frequently. Since 2017, the hospital has become a part of our lives, and the pain we had to see my Mumma go and come back from the hospital is unimaginable. So be grateful if you never had to roam around hospitals, doctors, or nurses for your loved ones. Cause when I did it, every second felt like a year with the fear of what will happen next. If you never had an experience like mine, take two minutes and thank the Lord for his unconditional grace and mercy on you.

Dad and I came back home to have a sleepless night. I remember silently crying in my bed and begging the Lord to keep Maa safe as Covid cases were slowly rising.

And there it was the Last time I fed Mumma,

This Day Last Year.

By HIS Grace,

A Daughter with A Mother in Heaven.
